I have had requests for some pictures of problems in the woods. People love the exciting stuff. Fortunately, there is not very much bad stuff on the forests I audit. When you invite an auditor in, you need to have everything under control.
The guys are going to have to fix this up a bit. My test..how long will the damage be apparent? In this case since it runs vertically up the hill water will just make it worse. Over time this will become a permanent gouge. It will pull soil and nutrients off the slope and into a small valley that is just below. Good practice would be to put in water bars to ensure the water is diverted before it picks up speed. I am sure the guys were thinking just that.
Surely this wood could have found a better use? Someone went to the trouble of hauling it to roadside, then just left it. Strange.
Skidder damage. This tree will likely live for a long time, but it will struggle and the wood quality will be very poor.
